Starting A New Group

There are two ways that you can start and run a bible study group using the materials provided here.

Starting a new group:

Ask some men you would like to meet with if they would like to be in a discussion group that would view the Bible Study and discuss the follow-up questions. This can be a group from your work, church, neighborhood, recreation or a combination of these areas. The optimum size for the group would be four to six men. Inform the men that you would like to view one Bible Study per week and set a time for your first meeting. Format:There are usually 4 or 5 discussion questions per weekly study. At your meetings, read and talk about the Group Discussion Questions you have printed out from the Bible Studies page. Here is a good schedule for a one hour meeting:

  • 30 Minutes Watch Bible Study on Video
  • 20-25 Minutes Discussion Questions
  • 5-10 Minutes Group Prayer
  • End Promptly At The Scheduled Time

Leading the discussion: If possible, try to divide your time evenly between the questions. But it's more important to talk about "real" things than it is to answer every single question. Make sure that each member gets "air time." Your role is to encourage each man to share his thoughts. If someone dominates the time, privately ask them to help you draw out the more reserved members of the group.

Experience:

You don't have to be an experienced Bible teacher to lead a discussion about the Man in the Mirror Bible Study. If someone asks a question beyond your scope, simply say so and move on. If your interested, please continue reading about participating in the Man in the Mirror Network. This is not mandatory.

Man in the Mirror Network Instructions:

If you would like to be an "official" Discussion Group Leader and part of the Man in the Mirror Network of men's ministry leaders read the following Discussion Group Leader Job Description, then fill out the form accepting the responsibilities outlined for a discussion group leader. DISCUSSION GROUP LEADER JOB DESCRIPTION What is the Man in the Mirror Network? We are in the early stages of forming a network of men who want to reach other men for Jesus Christ and help them grow. Most of these men will be Discussion Group Leaders. We’re only in the brainstorming phase, but possible benefits include:

  • Discounts on ministry resources and books
  • Giving us counsel on how to better serve you and other men’s ministry leaders
  • Tips on how to lead groups and reach men
  • Special participation in mass book distributions

  • Perhaps down the road a conference of fellowship, worship, and equipping exclusively for Man in the Mirror Network members

For now, being part of the Network begins by becoming a Discussion Group Leader and completing the application and commitments that follow.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
To become part of the network you must accept each of the following responsibilities. To accept, please read each of the following categories and check the box. Note: All boxes must be checked before you can click the submit button at the bottom of the page.

PERSONAL HOLINESS: I agree to endeavor with the Spirit's help to live in a way that recommends my message. If at any time I find myself not walking rightly with my God I agree to discuss this by email with Pat Morley or his designated coordinator.

DISCIPLE-MAKING: My group is my personal ministry. I agree to take a primarily disciple-making approach with the men in my group (versus fellowship, current events, counseling). I will think through and prepare a written purpose statement for the men at my table. I will seek to lead every man to a personal faith in Jesus Christ and a maturing relationship with and knowledge of Him.

PRAYER: I agree to pray for each man weekly (his needs, work, family life, walk with Jesus, personal salvation, spiritual growth). Tell your men you pray for them.

TELEPHONE: I agree to call or have someone call each of my men weekly to remind them of the meeting and to let them know we care about them.

GOALS: I agree to build the following five spiritual disciplines into my life; and on the strength of my example to challenge, encourage, and motivate my men to do the same:

  • Consistent Quiet Time (Matthew 14:23, Joshua 1:8)
  • Organized Bible Study (Proverbs 4:23, Romans 12:2, 2 Timothy 3:16-17)
  • Active Church Involvement (Hebrews 10:24-25)
  • Accountable Relationships (Galatians 6:1-2, James 5:16)
  • Personal Ministry (Ephesians 2:10, 2 Timothy 2:2, 1 Peter 4:10-11)

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS: I agree to visit one-on-one with each man at least annually over breakfast, lunch, or coffee.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: I agree to identify potential spiritual leaders from my table (FAT - faithful, available, teachable) and to invest in building them for spiritual service, appointing the most promising as an Assistant Leader (to lead discussion in your absence; possibly become a leader in future).

PUNCTUALITY: I agree to begin and end my group at the advertised times.

VISITORS: I agree to be sensitive and help make "new men" feel cared about (James 2:1-4).

The question on the final exam will be, "Were you faithful?"

To be faithful....

Name your men before Christ
Measure your men by the plumb line of Christ
Love your men by the example of Christ
Grow your men by the pattern set by Christ
Involve your men in the service of Christ

Leadership is a privilege and a responsibility for which God holds those who accept it accountable. It has a price which I agree to pay. I hereby agree to the terms of this job description for the current calendar year. If for any reason I determine my commitment has changed I agree to notify Pat Morley or his designated coordinator immediately (James 3:1).
