Discussion Questions

1. Who do you know who is quietly doing the work of something that is really quite heroic, brave, or beautiful? Do you think we tend to overlook these "ordinary" acts of heroism, beauty, and bravery? Explain your answer.

2. The characters in today's text are the disciples, the woman, and Jesus. Answer these questions about…

  • The Disciples: What did the disciples see? What did the disciples do? What did the disciples not see?
  • The Woman: What did she see that the disciples didn't see? What did she do?
  • Jesus: What did Jesus see that the disciples didn't see? Why the difference? What did He do?

3. What can we learn from this story?

4. Most of us are surrounded by people doing heroic, brave, and beautiful things. These are great people. We often fail to recognize these people when they walk among us. Don't miss the heroic deeds of your family and friends. Write down the names of several loved ones and friends. Next to their names jot down why they are a hero to you. Jot down what you think Jesus sees in them. Finally, why not tell those people how much you love and admire them. They will no doubt be deeply encouraged that you have taken the time to affirm them.
