Discussion Questions

1. Is there such a thing as "gradually" becoming a disciple? How about gradually becoming a "better" disciple?

2. According to Matthew 11:28 and 1 John 5:3, is it easy or hard to follow Jesus?

3. According to Mark 10:21, Matthew 13:44-46 and Luke 14:26-27,33, what does it cost to become a disciple?

4. Suppose a man professes faith but doesn't live like a disciple. Which of the following explanations are possible, and what are the implications of your answer(s)….

__ He was an emotional hearer only (not a disciple)
__ He is a prodigal who will return (a disobedient disciple)
__ He has lost his first love (a sinful Christian, backslider, cultural Christian)
__ He is giving as much of himself as he can (baby Christian, young and weak)
__ He has not been properly instructed (an ignorant disciple, Biblically illiterate)
__ Other ______________________________________

5. "The starting point for a disciple is a single allegiance to Jesus." We can help men by calling them to a single allegiance, by telling them they may be double-minded, by challenging them to read Christ's gospel for themselves. Who is someone that needs to rethink discipleship, and how can you help that person?
