Recently, Patsy and I celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary. I didn't expect to feel so giddy, because it never occurred to me it wouldn't happen. But I do! Both of our parents "married for life." So for us, it's a core value.
However, so many men I speak to through our ministry simply don't expect to be married for 40 years. Their parents divorced. Their wife's parents divorced. They don't "believe" it's possible. Can you imagine the fear that creates? My generation--the baby boomers--have deconstructed the institution of marriage. Baby boomers, the state of our culture is on us!

More than any other thing, Christian parents want their children to grow up and stay true to faith in Jesus. And nothing has more potential to transform our children into faithful followers than reading God's Word. But it won't happen by itself.
Patsy and I had an unconventional idea about this. When our kids were about twelve and nine, we decided to pay them to read the Bible. We told them, "If you will read five minutes a day for twenty-five or more days in a month, we'll give you the money to buy whatever CD you want. You can use a Bible devotional if you want." I thought I detected a yawn.
Then we added, "And if you read twenty-five days for ten out of twelve months, we will pay you $250." Suddenly their eyes lit up!
