March 2007 C&MA Men’s E-Newsletter
Impact
One of our men received a phone call one morning from a fellow who had worked with him on a church project. The caller stated that his wife had just served him with divorce papers and he needed to talk. They met that morning and for over two hours went through scriptures. Our man encouraged his friend to go home and discuss what they had gone through. The friend called later that afternoon and asked him if he could meet with both he and his wife. They met that evening and as a result both the man and his wife surrendered their lives to the Lord and the divorce action was canceled.

Book Spotlight: Twelve Ordinary Men by John MacArthur
|
Contrary to popular belief, we do not have to be perfect to do God's work. Jesus chose ordinary men - fisherman, tax collectors, political zealots - and turned their weakness into strength. MacArthur draws principles from Christ's careful, hands-on training of the original twelve disciples for today's modern disciple - you. Thousands of people have already handed out these books to their churches. Click here to order a case today for your church!

Leadership
Which Men’s Ministry Model Should We Use? We note with interest that the United Methodist Men have encouraged the pastors and men’s leaders in their denomination to use the “No Man Left Behind” (NMLB) model. There are a number of excellent models available, NMLB among them. C&MA Men’s Ministry encourages churches to prayerfully evaluate other models that are available, e.g., Top Gun and HonorBound (Blueprint) and select the one that will work the best in your situation.

Reboot (with 1 Samuel 17:49-50) Finishing the Job
The Enemy: The minions of the enemy are powerless without their champion. A Bible note speculates that the Philistines fled because they saw Goliath’s death as the judgment of the gods. The Philistines failed to comply with Goliath’s compact.
The enemy suffered a head injury. “He will crush his head and you will strike his heel.” (Gen 3:15): Upon being hit by a stone the size of a baseball, Goliath’s head would have whipped back and he would have fallen back. However, Goliath was moving forward. In addition, the weight of his armor would have been on the front. With loss of consciousness his knees buckled and he fell forward, face down.
The World: The army of Israel and Judah came alive having been energized by David’s victory.
The army plundered the Philistine camp, the world's way of ensuring that the weapons of the enemy would not be used against them again. In addition, the Philistines had a monopoly on the production of iron weapons. The Israelites were limited to bronze spears and swords (1 Sam 13:16-22). The Philistine weapons were now available to the Israelites.
The Spiritual Warrior: He ran and stood over Goliath. He showed no fear. He pursued the enemy with out weapons of hand to hand combat in the event that Goliath was only stunned and recovered.
Carry Through: He killed the giant and then cut off his head, He finished the job in contrast to Saul who failed to kill all of the Amelikites (1 Sam 15:9). He made sure the job was done.
He used the enemies own weapon to kill him.
He elevated the evidence of victory – celebration.
He put Goliath’s weapons in his own tent – a reminder of what the Lord had done.
“Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing happened.”
Winston Churchill
