February 2008 C&MA Men’s E-Newsletter

Focus
1You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others. (NIV 2 Tim 2:1-2)

Impact
One of our men was asked to play seasonal music at his office holiday party. He was instructed that since they could not “mix government and religion” he could not play Christmas carols, only secular seasonal music. After some thought he went back to the party organizer and told her that his musical ability was a gift from God and that he could not comply with her request. She relented and agreed for him to play “Hark the Herald Angels Sing.”

Another man, a professional Santa, was told he could not tell the candy cane story as was his routine. He responded to his employer, "I'll probably not be back next year then!" He stated that he could not quit telling the children about Jesus.

News
Rewired: From Performance to Passion. The men of Atlanta Road Alliance Church, Seaford, DE, will be hosting a one-day Rewired on March 1, 2008. The cost is $60.00.

What if it feels like you're never going to "make it?" Men often get caught in the "performance trap." We can't escape our own and other's expectations. It's easy to end up living a life of obligation and quiet frustration.

True Christianity is not about "acting good." God offers more than behavior modification. He offers heart transformation! Come learn how God REWIRES men's hearts to build a passionate faith.

Life
"The Dangerous Path Leading to Infidelity." Last week I read a comment on the New Man Web site that made my heart sink. It was a letter from a woman requesting more articles about the “dangerous path leading to infidelity.” The reason for her request? Her husband seemed to be treading on dangerous ground. Read more. SuccessToSignificance.com is a service of the Halftime® organization. Over the past decade, Halftime has led the way in building the Success to Significance movement, one of the greatest societal trends of our time.

More than 12,000 people turn 50 each day in America, and a Harvard-Met Life study shows that more than half of these individuals want more meaning and significance in the second half of life. As marketplace leaders redefine success and reorient their priorities, they can make an enormous impact on their communities and the world at large.

Individuals who embrace significance also represent a tremendous reservoir of talent through which ministries can economically and powerfully extend their reach and impact. Real needs that previously went unmet—as a result of payroll and other budget limitations—are suddenly within reach. As a result, the church better fulfills its mission and meets its call to good stewardship. For more, click here. (Ministry of the Month)

how-to's

disciplemen.com features "How-To's" to help train men for

service as a men's ministry leader. Each "How-To" is a "course" that is sent directly to your e-mail inbox over a six to ten-week period. They are designed to be used individually or with a group of leaders. Below is an excerpt from one of the "How-To" courses.

How Can I Encourage More Pastoral Involvement?

This series of emails will help you get on the same page with your pastor and garner more support for discipling men in your church.

Pastoral involvement in your efforts to disciple men is a key indicator of success. You can have a nice ministry with men without pastoral involvement, but you can't have a comprehensively effective one.

Other courses:
  • How To Recruit A Leadership Team
  • How to Start a Small Group
  • How to Reach Men Who Need Christ

Go to the courses page for more information.

What is the Best Practices & Resources Area?

The Best Practices & Resources area of disciplemen.com contains resources submitted by the community for leaders to use as they disciple men.

In the BP&R, you can do three things:
  • You can find and access resources to disciple men.
  • You can comment and rate the resources you've used.
  • You can submit resources for the Leadership Community

Reboot (with Joshua) Reconnaissance (Joshua 2:1)

“Go, look over the land,” he said, “especially Jericho.” Joshua needed to know what to expect when Israelites invaded the Promised Land. It is important for us in discipling men to gain insight into their belief systems and strongholds. These will be the things disciple and discipler will have to confront in advancing as a soldiers of Christ. This reconnaissance takes place in the course of building relationships with those we are discipling.

Have you taken the time to get to know the men you are discipling? Do you know the challenges and struggles they are facing?

Tolerance is the virtue of people who do not believe in anything.
