(Ministry of the Month) Male Friendship - "Saying nothing sometimes says the most." - Dickinson "Men often know one another's deepest feelings through the efficient expression of a look or a nod -- not by talking," reports William Speed Weed (yes, that's really his name) in an article all about the "rules" of male friendship. Friendship is built on trust. Disclosure, reciprocity, and intention form solid relationships between men. Friendship in the past has been gauged in a very feminine way - keeping in close contact on a daily basis and sharing the detailed minutiae of their lives. According to the article, "Male friends do more together but talk less than female friends. Yet that doesn't make male friendship any less remarkable or important." (Article of the Month). Reboot (with Joshua) Moving into Place (Joshua 3:1-4) The main players in chapter one were the Lord, Joshua and the leaders of the Reubenites, Gadites and half tribe of Manassah. The Lord gave the initial instructions. In the second chapter, Rahab is the focus. She was a woman who transferred her faith from the Canaanite gods to the Lord Jehovah. In chapter three the Lord is front and center in directing the Hebrews in crossing the Jordan River. Put the Lord in Front. (v4) Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before.” First, the leaders instructed the people to follow the Ark of the Covenant across the river. The Ark, representing the presence of the Lord and carried by Levites, was to show the way. The Lord calls us to take ways we have never traveled before. Do we put Him in front of everything we do? When the Lord asks us the impossible, He does not leave us to our own devices. Secondly, (v4) “But keep a distance of about a thousand yards between you and the ark; do not go near it.” That put the ark in a vulnerable position. Protection for the ark was 1000 yards back. Fast forward to 2 Sam 6:6-7. Uzzah died because he tried to steady the Ark. The message is this: God and God alone would protect His presence. Do we try to help God out by using secular solutions in our life and ministry, or do we trust the Lord to work through the power of the Holy Spirit? I will love the poor because they are alone.
