Risk Factors for Heart Attacks
In a recent study, researchers concluded that nine major risk factors could account for almost 90% of heart attacks (up from previous estimates of 50%). These risk factors affect both men and women and cross ethnic and geographic boundaries.

The most significant of the nine risk factors are cigarette smoking and a poor ratio of bad to good cholesterol. The study suggests that these two indicators can predict nearly two-thirds of heart attacks. The other risk factors are high blood pressure, diabetes, abdominal obesity, stress and depression, a lack of fruits and vegetables, and a lack of daily exercise. This study seemed to indicate that modest alcohol consumption (three to five drinks per week) was a slightly protective factor.
