Boys Falling Behind Girls in School
Man in the Mirror encourages leaders at PK’s The Challenge
Webcast Update: Man in the Mirror Bible Study

Boys Falling Behind Girls in School

The May 26th issue of BusinessWeek took an in-depth look at how girls are outperforming boys in school. On the first day of school an average boy is already two years behind an average girl in reading and writing. Boys who fall behind are then sent to special ed, where more than 70% of the class are boys.

Once boys hit their freshman year of high school, they're at greater risk. While girls are busy sweeping the honor roll at graduation, boys are bulking up in a weight room, playing video games, or listening to music. Boys are 30% more likely to drop out, 85% more likely to commit murder, and four to six times more likely to kill themselves, with boy suicides tripling since 1970.

In higher education, women earn 57% of all BAs and 58% of all master's degrees in the U.S. There are 133 girls getting BAs degrees for every 100 guys -- a number that's projected to grow to 142 women per 100 men by 2010, and to 156 women per 100 men earning degrees by 2020.

According to BusinessWeek, if this pattern of male disengagement and economic dependency continues, everyone loses. The growing imbalances will cause huge upheavals and alter the very core of family life in America.

We need to rescue men and help them rescue the next generation. What are
you doing to help your men help their boys?

Man in the Mirror encourages leaders at PK’s The Challenge

Promise Keepers brought The Challenge to the T. D. Waterhouse in Orlando for a near capacity crowd. PK asked Man in the Mirror to conduct a special lunch session to encourage leaders to keep the momentum going after the event. The goal was to help the leaders understand how to maximize the impact of events in the lives of their over the long-term. More than 600 pastors and leaders attended this special session.

For information about when The Challenge is coming to your area, check out www.promisekeepers.org.

Man in the Mirror also introduced these men to The Fellowship of the Red Bandana. This group of men, women, and ministries is inspired by the heroics of Welles Crowder who on September 11th was willing to go up while others were coming down the South Tower of the World Trade Center?
