Inform. No surprises. Keep your pastor "in the loop."

Ask the Pastor

Dear Pastor Pete:

What are some things that men have done to encourage you over the years?

I love it when men encourage me via email with a specific point of impact, like sharing a sermon point that really helped them.  I belong to a target shooting club, so at 49 my elders bought me a gun (a bit unconventional). I love when a guy gives me a DVD of a movie I really like. Once, a guy shared a book he'd been reading that I found very interesting. He offered to loan it to me, but surprised me by buying me a copy. (Pete adds: Remember, pastors have LOTS of books, so make sure we're really interested and not just being nice!)

Dr. Pete Alwinson is Senior Pastor of Willow Creek Church (PCA) in Winter Springs, Florida (www.willowcreekchurch.org). Pete has built his church by building his men. Pete's motto since he planted the church 20 years ago is "No Man Left Behind," which we stole (with his blessing) for the title of our book on discipling men in the church.

RECOMMENDED BOOK: WHO STOLE MY CHURCH?
By Gordon MacDonald

whostole "Turn it down! Turn it down!" This plea came from an older gentleman and was geared towards the worship band and its speaker system. But it was whispered fervently to his wife.

Is your church changing from the traditional, comfortable church you have been used to - sometimes leaving you wondering  where the "old days" went? Pastor and author Gordon MacDonald uses a fictional story to explain how to embrace the changes that your congregation may be facing and how you can use that force in positive ways.

In this book your own understanding of church will be challenged, and MacDonald will take you through what the early and modern church looks like, and the influences that change church. Find out how to embrace change and how others can to!

From Montana Man in the Mirror

MountainRecently, traveling Montana, a man told me he wouldn't be coming to the NMLB Conference because he wasn't a leader and we were building a conference for leaders. He simply couldn't have been more wrong. All men lead in some fashion.

In his wisdom, God has not given any of us everything we need to follow him successfully.
Instead, he chose to give us one another. The great commission calls us to build God's kingdom. To do this, we need the combined strength of each other. Jesus said the greatest compliment is to love God - he didn't say serve Him. It is not about what we do but what He does through us. Put in another way - the hero's of the Bible were ordinary men with typical human flaws and
weakness. They show us that when it comes to serving God's kingdom we don't have to be spectacular - just available. Spiritual leaders are ordinary people, called and enabled by God. All men have talents - all things God's help can lead.

We need everyone involved - each of us has a talent (Check 1 Corinthians 12:4-11). As
the saying goes, "A talent unused is a debt to mankind."

Man in the Mirror Field Network Pilot
Briefing

Since Man in the Mirror has been successful in equipping leaders over a phone from a home base, think of how much more effective it would be if it was happening live -- one-on-one --  man to man! Who could better ascertain the gaps that a specific leader or church might have than a "feet on the street" associate with a personal relationship and working knowledge of that ministry's successes and struggles?

By the grace of God, we are going to the "field" with a network of men that will be trained and equipped to serve pastors and leaders. To ensure success, the concept will be piloted so that we can capture the best practices and catalogue the lessons learned before we deploy the concept on a larger scale. We have four test pilots in the market based on the interests areas of our first group of "field associates."
  • No Man Left Behind Conferences
  • Seminars
  • Reaching Every Man Events
  • Ministry Consultants

To learn more about the pilots and get updates on the "latest," visit our communications channel at mimfieldnetwork.blogspot.com.

Dear Pam
Advice for you MIM Church Event

We are just getting our men's ministry started at my church and are thinking about having a men's event of some sort. What would you say are the most important things to think about and prepare to ensure the events' success?

Yours truly,
Ida Mann

Dear Ida,

Let me congratulate you on getting started!! I would suggest my 7-step "Git 'er Done" process:

1. SET THE DATE. Get it on the church calendar. Nail it down!
2. GET THE PASTORAL SUPPORT. Get him involved. What's in it for him?
3. ASSEMBLE YOUR TEAM.  Use them to support you with the skills you're looking for (organizers, promoters, registration handlers, etc.)
4. CREATE THE VISION. How will this event fit into the big picture of your men's ministry?
5. KNOW YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE. Decide who you want to reach & plan your content accordingly.
6. PROMOTE! PROMOTE! PROMOTE! You can't over do it. Be creative! And remember that personal invitation is key.
7. CAPTURE THE MOMENTUM. Provide a follow-up study for the men to sign up for--on the spot!! Strike while the iron is hot.
