No Man Left Behind

Imagine building a major skyscraper without blueprints. Not a pleasant thought, I know. Now imagine building a sustained disciple-making ministry to men without a structural plan. The lack of effective blueprints for ministry to men in the local church has been a major problem for a long time. GOOD NEWS—we now have one. No Man Left Behind is a powerful work put together by three of my favorite men. It is a must read for all pastors and men's ministry leaders.

Many of us in Montana share the vision of using Man in the Mirror to bring a credible message of Jesus to all the men in our state. Discipleship is not easy. Jesus never said it would be. No Man Left Behind provides us with many needed tools to work with. It is exactly what we need.

Harrison Fagg

I love the focus of this must read book about a God given mandate to make disciples of ALL nations (Matt. 28:19). This is the one book every pastor and church leader should read and then encourage their men to read and LIVE and we would see a mighty movement of God result!

Phil Downer
President, Discipleship Network of America

At First Baptist Church Woodstock, we have embraced a theme of ministry to and through men that is best captured by the title of this book... No Man Left Behind. Few on the planet do men's ministry better than Man in the Mirror. As Pat has said before, "Resources are the bridge between intention and execution." They get it and want to get you to have... No Man Left Behind!

Men. Passionate. Church. Too often, those three words just don't fit together. No Man Left Behind addresses this disconnect head on, distilling years of trial and error, and leaving you with the gems.

Make disciples. The single greatest command that Jesus has commissioned us to carry out, is often confused with the other things that I think my men need to be made into—worshippers, servants, teachers, leaders. Important as these other concepts are, in the command to make disciples they are given their proper framework. The concept of discipleship presented here, shared in the first minutes of the Leadership Training and in the first pages of this book, has been life changing to the vision of men's ministry at my church. Men's ministry is no longer defined as those who come to our men's events. Rather, men's ministry is defined by how we are able to disciple a man, any man who has made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ, where he is at. No Man Left Behind is thankfully not another book giving seven steps that will ultimately lead to frustration, aggravation and despair. Instead, if you will put in the hard work of discipling men, put in the hard work of investing your life as a man in the life of another man – not only will men not be left behind, but they will learn to walk with Christ and show others how to walk with Him as well.

Thank you for writing the book. The initial pages are exciting. I will gladly buy it and encourage others to, including our pastor. The one thing that came from our workshop was a commitment by the three men attending to pray for our pastor before services on Sunday. One or two had been doing this regularly. Last Sunday there were five of us. I could sense the encouragement felt by our Pastor Jeff as he looked around the room and heard our prayers.

The wisdom our leadership team has put into practice through our association with Man in the Mirror has transformed the men's ministry at First United Methodist Church from a “meet, eat, burp and go home club” into a “force to be reckoned with.” It's no longer business as usual. Our motto is: "Every man a leader, every man an influence for Christ, and every man needs a lift!” With this book, however, we may want to add a line: “And no man left behind!”

The Reverend Dr. H. William Green
Associate Pastor of First United Methodist Church in Cary, N.C.

First let me tell you that it was an honor for me to have you and the rest of the team let me read the first chapter of your new book. I also consider it an honor to be able to write an endorsement for what I think is such a wonderful and God Blessed organization! Man in the Mirror has had such an effect on my life. You, David and Pat have shown me so much love and support during my visits. Just from the few pages that I have read of this new book, No Man Left Behind, I know that it will lift the spirits of many men! Just like The Man in the Mirror and Discipleship for the Man in the Mirror, I believe that the book, No Man Left Behind, will be an encouragement to every man that reads it! You have truly captured all of the points from the Leadership Training Center and the Think Tank Session that I attained in Orlando.

Congratulations, on another man-friendly resource!
I liked, as before with MIM ministry resources:

• The practical, real life illustrations.

• The concept that ministry to men is about effectively discipling men in life changing ways, rather than a commitment to separate structures and endless meetings.

• The emphasis that allows for the culture of my church to mould the processes that are adopted.

• The questions at the end of each chapter that aid reflection and discussion.

YOU GO MEN!

I often quote Pat Morley to say, "A man is a hard thing to reach." In this powerful book's first chapter, Pat, Brett and David declare that reaching men is harder than rocket science. They are right.

United Methodist Men have forged a partnership with Man in the Mirror because they know a lot about what it takes to recruit, train and inspire men who God will use to accomplish the toughest mission outreach on earth—men. We know that to reach men in and beyond the United Methodist Church, we need strong and capable partners in Christ.

This book is packed with the essential tools and truth that are delivered by Man in the Mirror in leadership training courses delivered worldwide. Get it, read it, know it, practice it—it works.

Having been in Men's Ministry since 1981, I can tell you from personal experience how much of a challenge it is to reach, disciple and keep men involved in the local church. This book could be just the instrument God is calling your church to use as a guide to capture and sustain a man through a successful Men's Ministry.

Art Brucks

I have read through the first chapter of the book and found it to be right on the mark. Men are clearly the missing link in today's churches. Only through the discipleship of men will we begin to re-build the church and the family as God intended them to be. This book will be a great tool to help in the discipleship of today's man. Bless you for all you do at Man in the Mirror.

No Man Left Behind promises to be a book that delivers on its promise to help churches develop and sustain a men's ministry. The authors, Patrick Morley, David Delk, and Brett Clemmer, provide us with a concise guide for discipling men. Using real stories about real men makes the book come alive. Not stopping there, the authors provide us with discussion questions and exercises, causing us to reflect and apply the learnings to our situations. There is also “Remember This” sections that summarize the key points from previous material.

Developing a visual model that we can all identify with, the authors first present the big picture. This allows us to understand the context of a men's ministry within the church and our discipling efforts. Then, we experience each part of the model, seeing how the different pieces fit together to produce a working model for our churches. I highly recommend this as a must “read and apply” for every man in our churches.

Donald V. McCain, Ed.D

No Man Left Behind provides a proven template for building an effective ministry to men. It is a valuable guide for moving from burned pancakes to disciplemaking.

No Man Left Behind provides clear guidelines for energizing our men and leading them to rich and productive lives in Christ.

Like a laser, No Man Left Behind identifies the why's and how's behind a critical strategy to train, build up, and energize men to be powerhouses for Christ. While keeping me realistic as I personally lead, the book also has pumped me to the tenth power to grasp the long range possibilities of being a part of the growing new movement of God among men.

As the men of the church go, so goes the church. Most Christian denominations in America and Europe are in a serious decline. Men are absent and many of those in the pews are sadly living as cultural Christians. An actuary could determine the date many of our local churches will turn out the lights and lock to doors, by analyzing our aging congregations. If our churches are to become relevant to the younger generations who are largely absent, and become magnets for those searching for a new and more meaningful life, our churches must find new and more meaningful spiritual life. In May of 2004, I attended LTC training classes at MIM. This experience launched me into the single most challenging and rewarding spiritual journey of my life. Men's Ministry is demanding work, but the demand is great. Statistics reveal that most of our churches are living-out The Great Omission, not living-out The Great Commission. MIM organization is dedicated to the proposition that men living fully-alive in Christ, will create churches fully-alive in Christ. No Man Left Behind holds the promise of being one of the seminal books of our time, for the renewal and revival of Christian men and for the Kingdom.

Brett's story is more common than we would like to admit—everyday men are losing the battle. As the National President of the United Methodist Men we find ourselves in similar battles as it pertains to winning the hearts of men. No Man Left Behind will be a valuable tool in reaching men inside and outside the church as we work toward the goal of effective Men's Ministry, reaching every man.

There you stand...desperately hungry, mouth watering and the apple tree is right in front of you. On the lower branches you see the apples that are easiest to reach. They're not fully ripened, they haven't grown into fullness yet, but they are within reach. You look upward, and there in the highest reaches of the tree are pieces of fruit that make you wonder how there can be such a difference in fruit on the same tree. But getting to that one is much harder, it requires a lot more work, and even some risk.

Now you have a choice. Will you take the low-hanging fruit and be satisfied with what you can get, or will you take a risk, expend the effort to get the fruit that's best?

Church leaders face a similar decision today in their ministries. The desire/need for quick results often leads to make choices to pursue the low-hanging fruit of women's, children's, and youth ministries. Meanwhile, the men, usually found in the most difficult to reach places, are passed by.

There are no quick ways to get there from here, but the results will be worth it. This book offers a ladder to reach the top of the tree and begin harvesting the fruit that has been overlooked for too long....men.

Head Coach - The Grove Church

No Man Left Behind is a men's book for men. Two problems plague the church today: biblical illiteracy and male involvement. No Man Left Behind goes a long way toward helping solve the second problem by providing a paradigm for churches to develop mature disciples for Christ. This book will be a superb resource for both laity and clergy. Best of all the work is clear, readable, practical and highly recommended.

No Man Left Behind. What a concept for the church to grasp, especially in our times when men are falling behind because of family breakups, sinful addictions, and wounded hearts. The principles laid out in this book have been presented at Man In The Mirror's seminar, Building A Sustainable Men's Ministry. The one principle that has stood out to our IronMen is the "right next step". We are in the process of capturing momentum by moving each man to the next level in his spiritual journey. We are committed to sharpening each other so that we begin to take the shape of Jesus Christ.

Whether the unwritten dress code for Sunday morning is dark suits or jeans, this material has prophetic insight into the men who are gathering at your church. Better yet, this insight is coupled with practical suggestions in ministering to men, however they are clothed.

This new material excites me. Finally a comprehensive book that talks about the failure of ministry to men, the why/need for making discipleship to men a priority, and the basic foundational model of how to do it. I have been in men's ministry for 19 years and this is the first book I have seen that takes a complete view of how to build a comprehensive men's discipleship ministry program. Thank you Man in the Mirror.

Ever since our new Men's Leadership Team attended our first Man in the Mirror seminar, we have started a Men's Ministry that has become extremely close. We took what we learned from it and ran with it. We keep reminding ourselves that the group is awesome now, but will be even better in 10 years. From a small core of 3-5 guys, we have grown into a Sunday School class of 10-12 regular guys. We have also spun off another group that meets every other Thursday Night to study The Purpose Driven Life.

We are the KirkWood Iron Men. We have printed up our own T-shirts and business cards. Each of us feels the other "has our back."

We have gotten together to feed the hungry, help repair single mom's houses in the congregation, take a Hurricane Katrina victim under our wing, and helped some of our men pay their utility bills. What we face, we face together. I can't stress enough how much the Man in the Mirror training has helped us tap into a real deep seated need for the men in our church. Many of us have gone through life changing events recently, and our men's group has only grown because of the training we received from the Man in the Mirror organization. We have completed the original The Man in the Mirror series and we now are currently studying The Dad in the Mirror.

We are striving to become better men, husbands, fathers and disciples. The bond that we have accomplished in a year's short time has been nothing short of phenomenal. I can't thank you enough.

I have previewed No Man Left Behind, and I absolutely love it!!! Bring it on! Our Men's Leadership Team will be definitely reviewing this book and using it to further help our KirkWood Presbyterian Iron Men. I love its foundation and the "assembly line" mentality. It's exactly what we need.

I am happy to be able to endorse your book and the ministry that it supports. I attended a Men's Ministry Leadership training course in Philadelphia, Pa. last year, sponsored by Man in the Mirror. The course was awesome! This was in preparation to lead the men's ministry at my church.

Since then, we have put together a team to plan events and try to reach men both inside and outside our church. While we have had some success, the efforts have not been without their frustrations. It seems to be almost impossible to motivate people to participate.

It seems to me that there is a crying need for a book such as this to put things into perspective and to act as a resource for those who are trying to build a men's ministry.

After having previewed the first chapter, I will have to agree that it is "Rocket Science." We need more teaching in this regard to be able to reach men for Christ and to help them lead their families in this fallen world.

I read the intro and first chapter as provided and obviously it was familiar as I had been in the training in January and got to see much of what you were working on then. Below is my endorsement, followed by name and title.

The Man in the Mirror answers the call to reach men, this book reaches leaders of men with clear, modern day content for making disciples. No Man Left Behind is written by men on the front lines of the battle and in clear sight of the enemy. Every leadership team needs to study this material and prepare their group.

“Go and make disciples of ALL men.” I am now starting to understand the meaning of “ALL” as I continue to be equipped by Man In the Mirror. My calling to ministry is a result of an obedient heart to help fight the Battle for Men's Souls which Man In the Mirror is committed to fulfill. Our churches provide great opportunities to disciple men and this book will provide you with a practical guide to put men in a place where they can be discipled. As the first chapter emphasizes, it is rocket science and it does not happen over night. One thing, Man in the Mirror has done for me is to help me recognize that a Men's Ministry does take 10+ years to establish. This book has also identified the importance of establishing an ALL INCLUSIVE ministry which focuses on meeting each man where they are in their relationship with the Lord. I encourage you to take this book and be all inclusive and lay the foundations for this No Man Left Behind model and watch God work in your church. Thanks Pat, David, and Brett for your obedience to lead the charge in the Battle for Men's Souls.

The vision for men's ministry is not to have a men's group in every congregation! Morley, Delk and Clemmer have nailed it—the vision is for every man to have a living, growing relationship with Jesus Christ; for every man to be a disciple! When that happens, the entire congregation and community benefit! This book will give you tools to help make disciples of the men in your congregation and beyond.

Doug Haugen, Director
Lutheran Men in Mission
The men's ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

In the mission of Jesus, He understood with all certainty the beginning of His mission. He understood the birth in a cow's stall, the ridicule from his own people, and their attempts to kill him. He knew from the beginning, the calloused hearts of his closest disciples who after being with Him for three years would not understand how to be great in God's kingdom, but argued over who would be the greatest. Jesus, while at the lowest human point in his life, said, "It is finished." He knew when His mission was over. At the point of what could be the lowest point in His ministry, He won the greatest victory. He knew when and how to hand the mission over to subordinates who had the capability to derail the whole mission and purpose. He trusted God, the Father, to send the comforter to empower these struggling men who were to take over the ministry.

In our ministry to men, to any one of us, God may say, that's all I want you to do here, at this time or at this place. Once we reach that juncture, if we decide to submit to the will of the Father, we may have to step away from the very thing that means the most to us. Possibly the only or the first ministry God has guided us to, we are now called to leave. On the other hand, if we move ahead in our own strength, because God can not support something that is not in His will, our self, pride and our determination will press ahead with our plans. Our ministry will decrease or fall apart completely, or worse yet, we may injure younger Christians through our own stubbornness. Being truly led by the Holy Spirit will bring us through some exciting and rough water, but God's greater blessing is ahead as long as we trust Him in leading our Men's Ministry.

Understanding that if I am truly submitted to God's will for my ministry, I may not always be comfortable, well fed or drive the nicest car in town. Submitting at any and all times to God's will, I may not understand or I will not be able to explain God's plan to others. It is ultimately important that the builder of a ministry know the starting, ending and the middle ground. Doctor Tony Evans said, that you can tell how tall a building the builder has in mind by the depth of the foundation he is willing to dig. He went on later to say, too many ministries today want to build sky scraper ministries on chicken coop foundations. We need to share the mission and the plan with a trusted few in case God calls us to another area of ministry, and the momentum of the first will be lived out by the trusted few. Perhaps the hardest, we must understand the end. We need to have a clear plan of action and prepare the next leader for the group, just as the Holy Spirit was sent for us, the next leader must be in the wings at all times.

Wayne Jackson

True warriors will face withering enemy fire and staggering odds to save their wounded comrades on the battlefield. We stand in awe of the sacrifices made by these brave soldiers, and wish we too could risk our lives in such a way for others. We can. No Man Left Behind inspires us with a powerful vision of how we too can invest and risk our lives to reach and disciple men at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The combo of Morley, Delk and Clemmer is a winner! They are real men who think deep, pray hard, know men and who fight every day for men's souls.

Pat, David and Brett are frontline warriors in this ultimate battle for men's souls. The final bell has been sounded and MIM has stepped up it's attack by providing dynamic training and comprehensive instruction in the area of building men's ministries. I recently attended the MIM Building a Sustainable Men's Ministry workshop and it was by far the best training and instruction I've ever had. It has made a profound impact on how our church views its mission in regards to reaching men for Christ. The book, No Man Left Behind, covers all of the material discussed in the workshop and more. If you could only have one resource from which to build your men's ministry, you better make it this book. MIM has been outstanding in their support and assistance in helping our church jump-start our men's ministry.

How exciting it is to see that the book you spoke of in January is nearing publication. I recently finished Discipleship for the Man In the Mirror with my small (but continuing to mature) men's group. I look forward to being able to lead my men through this as well, as they learn to lead other men to walk with Christ as a disciple.

Man in the Mirror has been vital in establishing Men's Ministry at our church. Our team has attended training and conferences which have helped our vision and given us some practical tools to use. This book adds to our arsenal of ideas to implement as we reach the guys here at Bethel.

My first exposure to MIM was in a small group setting discussing the original The Man in the Mirror book. Our small group has continued to meet with our senior pastor for 10 years. Three years ago, we were blessed to have Pat Morley come to our Christian men's conference on Seabrook Island. The weekend Success that Matters seminar was a life changing spiritual experience for several of our men. We followed that with more small groups, and eventually sent a team of 5 leaders to the Building a Sustainable Ministry to Men course in Orlando.

By following the principles we learned there, we have slowly but steadily built our men's ministry. We continue to use the various life plans, videos and books. These excellent resources make it simple to reach out to our men. Thanks to Man in the Mirror, we are serving our purpose of becoming fishers of men. God bless all of you at Man in the Mirror.

Leadership Training Center

Man in the Mirror jump started our Men's Ministry in 2004 by providing a firm foundation through their Leadership Training Center and ongoing education and insight to build our ministry to men. Their training is the best investment our church has made: men are excited about coming to church and so are their women!

I had a chance to attend the Leadership Training class at Man in the Mirror. It was like drinking out of a fire hose for two and a half days with all of the helpful information they give you in ministry to men. One of the biggest things I carried away was the part about building an all-inclusive ministry to men. If you have ushers start a small group, parking lot attendants another small group…isn't it funny we want men to get together and tell them they need to spend more time with their families? Start out using something like the Man in the Mirror devotional. Ask men to get to church 30 minutes early to do a devotional together. You know it works, they meet, they start to build relationships, they start doing things together and they invite others as well. If you want to start a ministry to men start where the men already are. I am looking forward to the new book No Man Left Behind in reading the first chapter they talk about the all-inclusive men's ministry along with other helpful insights it is a must read if you are going to build a strong ministry to men.

It has been a little over a year since I brought my pastor and several other men to the LTC training classes. We all had a great time and gained tremendous insight into building a sustainable Men's Ministry at East Cooper Baptist Church here in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina . When we returned home we recruited a group of men and explained the concepts behind Create - Capture - Sustain and the Open - Closed continuum. We set that system in motion and had a very good year.

My favorite part of the training session was going to Pat's Friday Morning Bible Study. What a fantastic experience! We were so excited about the Bible study with table leaders concept that we made a plan to copy it and it has been a huge hit with our men. The ECBC "Man 2 Man" Bible study is regularly attended by over 90 men each Friday morning from 6:30 to 7:35. Our goal is to engage every willing man in discipleship. The fruit of this effort has been wonderful.

I continue to tell men in other churches about your vision and encourage them to attend the LTC if possible. I pray for your success.

To God be the glory!

At a men's ministry conference in 1997 I heard Patrick Morley declare, "If you do what you've always done, you'll be what you've always been!" That aptly describes my personal challenge through the years and the struggling men's ministry in churches I've attended. However, in 2003, a friend from my church and I attended the Building a Sustainable Ministry to Men training in Orlando. It was an "AHA" moment for both of us! Pat, David and Brett share concepts in this book that are "battle-tested.” Apply them to your life and ministry with men. Believe me—they work!

I have found that Man in the Mirror Ministry and its staff and resources to be essential in equipping me to succeed in winning the battle for men's souls in the twenty-first century. After attending the Building a Sustainable Ministry to Men course in Orlando, March 2006, I now consider Man in the Mirror to be my line of defense, a mentor and my coach as I perform my ministry in the Brotherhood of St. Andrew. Jesus is my pilot and Man in the Mirror is my navigator.

When I took the LTC class on Building a Sustainable Ministry to Men, our men's ministry was getting a little thin. We would go from event to event with fewer and fewer men turning out each time. The training I received at Man in the Mirror, condensed in this book, gave my leadership team and I a firm foundation to build on, and tangible tools with which to build and sustain our men's ministry church-wide well into the future.

Thank you Pat, and thank you Man in the Mirror.

I was really charged with the excellent material and strategy that I acquired from attending Man in the Mirror's “Building a Sustainable Ministry to Men” course. I have not been completely successful in being able to transfer that vision to the men back home so I am thrilled that the same authors who put together the various programs at Man in the Mirror have put together the blue print for building disciples. AMEN!

I have a passion for men's ministry and I searched for training to help me be able to reach men. A opportunity came to go to Orlando for Building a Sustainable Ministry to Men course. Several men from my church came down two years ago and attended your conference on building a Men's Ministry. We have used some of the concepts learned at that seminar. Also we use your books and are giving out The Dad in the Mirror, this Father's Day. Also we had one of your regional speakers come to our church last year for a very successful seminar. It looks as if this book is taking the Men's Ministry effort to an even higher level. I will be looking forward to seeing it in print.

I had a chance to read the intro chapter and it is great. I can envision myself sitting in the LTC training and hearing these words.

I am very grateful to Man in the Mirror because of the massive impact it has had on me personally and the men of First Baptist Church of Atlanta. In the winter of 2003, I was given the opportunity to begin a ministry to the men of FBA. I did not know where to begin or what to do. So we began by enlisting 10 guys from the church to help with the new endeavor. Then in May 2003, I learned of a training for men's ministry being offered at Woodstock First Baptist Church. It was put on by Man in the Mirror. So I planned to attend and invite the new leadership team. About 8 of the guys took me up on the offer and it has been "ON" since that weekend. It was the defining moment in our men's ministry.

It was at that training we committed not make men's ministry a list of events that the guys were expected to attend. Instead, we learned that the best approach was an all-inclusive one that was a ministry to all the men in our church and the ones we wanted to see come.

Since 2003 we have had the opportunity to impact the lives of hundreds of men. Our first event to "Create Momentum" in 2003 almost 200 guys attended. This past March our "Create Momentum" event drew in over 700 guys. In 2005, we were able to disciple nearly 400 men. I realize we are not at max warp speed but God is truly moving this ministry in the right direction. Thanks to Man in the Mirror Ministry because you guys helped us build the right foundation in developing a ministry to men that does not just make workers but builds disciples.

Brian Shuler
Men's Ministry Pastor
First Baptist Church of Atlanta

The LTC seminar was so inspiring to me. I put into practice many of the principles that were taught. Since the class I have personally discipled eight men over a two year period. They have gone through a six month class covering 23 major themes of the bible. Since then they are all engaging in active ministry and are being used by God in wonderful ways. The part of the class that inspired me most was the statement "It is not behavior modification but heart transformation.” Another segment talked about raw material and how to let them be who they are but be patient and see them grow. I have experienced that firsthand. I have also used "give them what they want so you can give them what they need." I would encourage anyone who has a heart for men to attend Man in the Mirror LTC classes. They are so valuable for your edification and the Kingdom of God. I certainly endorse The Man in the Mirror ministry for all who want to reach the men of this world.

I am Charlie Gray, CEO of Carolina Trucking Academy in Raleigh, North Carolina. The book and training program has been very instrumental as a base line for an effort within our church to revive men's ministry. The training was attended by a Men's Committee (group of 5) from Fuquay Varina United Methodist Church (1700 members). We have used information contained in the book and training to guide our efforts. One of the most effective benefits are the $1.00 books. Our men love them and grab them at our monthly breakfast as well as from a station we assemble in our entry foyer after each of our three worship services on Sunday.

Seminars

The Men's Ministry at our church has been impacted greatly by the ministry of Man in the Mirror! Several years ago a small number of men from our leadership team attended a "Discipling Mens' Hearts Seminar" and that weekend opened our eyes to changes that we needed to make in the Men's Ministry at our church. Now, two years later, we are seeing the results of that training as we are moving into a Discipling Focused Ministry instead of an "Event Centered" ministry. At our last Men's Retreat, we had a Man in the Mirror speaker, Dr. Charles Cooper, share Pat Morley's "Seven Seasons of a Man's Life" and it resulted in many small groups of men meeting and sharing what God was doing in their lives. We thank God for Pat Morley and his team of men who are giving so much to churches like ours who see Men's Ministry as one of the main priorities of the church today.
