Two Kinds of People:
Those Who Build Up and Those Who Tear Down

from Pat Morley

Volume 185
June 19, 2006

The other day at the gym I saw something so clearly that it took my breath away.

Two women were discussing potty training while, at the same time, two disc jockeys were making jokes about teenagers dry humping at school (don't be upset with me.I've toned it down!).

As I listened to these two conversations, the clouds parted and I saw as clearly as I have ever seen anything in my life: There are people who are trying to build up, and there are people who are trying to tear down what the others are trying to build up.

So we have one group of people trying to do good, raise fine young families, make honest livings, contribute to their communities, and live with dignity. And then we have cynical, jaded, negative people who, for whatever reasons, despise all the efforts of those who would do good. They rip at them and ridicule their efforts. They make fun with sarcasm. They strip the human experience of its dignity.

There is a huge battle raging all around us. I realized, "I need to keep a right perspective. I cannot allow myself to be lulled into thinking, 'It's not that big of a deal.'" It is. If for no other reason, the children don't deserve it.

For the glory of Christ and no other reason,

Pat Morley
