Julian's Hazelnut

Volume 336

I've been mentioning things that I think about all the time. Here's another example.

Julian of Norwich, author of Revelations of Divine Love, was a legitimate Christian mystic. She lived her life in an anchorage attached to a small church in Norwich, England, in the late 14th and early 15th centuries.

My wife, Patsy, and I made a visit to see her room -- hardly any of the locals even know it's there. I have a candle from her room here in my office to commemorate the visit.

In Julian's book, she described how in one of her revelations she saw a small object about the size of a hazelnut in the palm of her hand. She asked, "What is this?"

And the answer came, "It is all that is made." Then she wondered how it continued to exist and not disintegrate. Again the answer came, "It exists, both now and for ever, because God loves it."

In that "little thing" she saw three truths: God made the world, God loves it, and God sustains it.

I think about that all the time. In fact, I keep a bag full of hazelnuts here in my office. They remind me of the awesome power of our holy God. They remind me that nothing happens to us by the will of man apart from the will of God. He is firmly in charge of His creation.

Yours for changed lives,

Patrick Morley, Ph.D.
