Be prepared. You're up against far more than you can handle on your own. Take all the help you can get, every weapon God has issued, so that when it's all over but the shouting you'll still be on your feet. Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation are more than words. Learn how to apply them. You'll need them throughout your life. God's Word is an indispensable weapon. In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other's spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out. Ephesians 6:14-17 (The Message)
Powerful words from the apostle Paul. He knew that life is not easy. He had personal experience with the difficulties of living a life of faith.
God gives us all the spiritual equipment we need. Those tools include reading His Word, spending time in prayer, and interacting with other believers.
Equipping the Man in the Mirrorhelps you put those tools into practice. This quarterly devotional magazine provides you with short daily devotionals, daily Bible readings, ideas to use with small groups, encouraging articles and insightful interviews with men’s ministry leaders. Everything in the publication is aimed at men like you: men with busy careers and active families, fathers, husbands, grandfathers, men enjoying retirement, and most of all, men who are looking for more from their spiritual lives.
When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. John 1:36–37
In the seventh grade I went out for the basketball team. The coach kept making cuts and making cuts. I was hopeful. Then finally, I was the last person cut from the team. It was devastating.
When I became a Christian, I found out about a team that is changing the world … and no one gets cut. God is busy recruiting all of us, just like He recruited His disciples in the New Testament.
The passage above shows what happened when Andrew and another unnamed disciple heard John the Baptist refer to Jesus as the “Lamb of God.” They knew that indicated Jesus was the Messiah they had been seeking. So they followed Him. In the accompanying verses, we discover that Jesus turned and asked, “What do you want?” (v. 38). They simply asked where He was staying, and Jesus said, “Come…and you will see” (v. 39).
He’s still offering the same invitation to anyone who wants to follow Him. He’s still saying, “Come.” You don’t have to worry—there’s a place for you on the team. MIMBS 3 ____________________________________________________
Describe a time when you either were cut from a team or you made the team. How did you feel? Are you currently an active member of Christ’s team?
Daily Reading: Ezekiel 39:1-40:27, James 2:18-3:18, Psalm 118:1-18, Proverbs 28:2
And speaking of teams, if you lead a small group or teach a Sunday school class, Equipping the Man in the Mirror has bonus features for you. At the end of each week there are questions to use with your group. Your men can read the devotionals individually throughout the week. When your group meets, you can discuss the questions to reinforce the devotionals into each man's life. Here's some examples of these group discussion questions:
Describe a great team experience or a bad team experience that you’ve gone through.
How would the team referred to in the devotional be different from an earthly team?
Do you believe that you have a place on Jesus’ team? Why or why not? As we pray, ask God how He wants to use you on the team.
